Thirteen VCIS students joined the American Field Service (AFS) student exchange program in Lamezia Terme, Italy from May 5 to 25, 2016. The intercultural exposure gave the students a great opportunity to introduce what the Philippines is and share with their Italian counterparts who Filipino students really are. The students’ rich experiences in Italy blew away any language, culture, or citizenship barriers present during the program.
Students attended the convention and exchanged nations’ flags with Italy at the European Union, wearing the Philippine costumes with much pride. They also had chances to speak about the Philippines, VCIS as their home school, and homeschooling experiences. In turn, they took hold the things Italy is most famous for: a short Italian language course at Istituto Tecnico Economico (ITE) V. De Fazio, Italian cuisine and pizza-making sessions at Masseria I Risi laboratory, and sports lessons at the Liceo Scientifico Sportivo.
The multifaceted experience was an explosion of international awareness, culture, friendship, and acceptance. We’re excited to know where VCIS students are flying next!
