The “internationally minded” learner

By: Victory Christian International School // Date: October 20,2016

It’s proven by time and culture that people exposed to various culture are generally more successful at what they do. This is backed up by economy figures and businesses in different countries that were able to pan out successfully. Their “being globally minded” is one key tool. The world challenges the young generation to develop this kind of mindset that they can fully realize and utilize to prepare for a life of success. How exactly can we train our children to see the world beyond, starting today?

  • Let your child explore and ask. The biggest limiter to a person’s success are the words, “I know that already.” Teach your child to be the person who understands that he/she knows very little yet and should go on learning new things in life. Let your child explore different books, places, and people, and encourage him/her to remain open, inquisitive, thinker, and reflective.
  • Train your child to communicate better. Help your child communicate his/her ideas and collaborate with various people of age, culture, and orientation. Being a communicator unfolds opportunities for relationships, learning, and experiences. Imagine your child, on a regular basis, asking himself/herself the following questions:|
Do I actively listen to the ideas of others?
Am I mindful of how I feel?
Do I evaluate other people’s words and actions with objectivity instead of personally?
What can I learn from other cultures to approach a problem or  come up with a better solution?
Do I seek to understand the point of view of others, especially if I disagree with them?
  • Teach your child to plan and take risks if needed. Planning is a life skill that every child should  maximize learning about. Expose your child to unfamiliar situations with courage and forethought. Teach him/her the power of planning and emphasize the importance of putting desires under the wings of the Master Planner. As it says in the Bible,In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps” (Proverbs 16:9).
